From Graduate to Senior Partner

What does a successful career really look like? For some, it’s about progression. For others, it’s about purpose, people, or balance. For Sarah Yardley, Senior Partner and Head of Audit at mgr, it’s all of those things, combined into a career that has evolved over more than 16 years within the same firm.

Her journey is proof that when the right environment meets the right ambition, long-term careers don’t just happen, they thrive.

Starting Strong

Sarah joined MGR as a graduate, at a time when the firm looked very different to what it is today. Since then, both she and the business have grown significantly.

“I joined as a graduate and never actually left,” she explains. “I completed my qualification, moved into management, and then progressed through to partner.”

It’s a path that reflects not only personal drive, but a culture that actively supports development. Progression isn’t automatic, but it is achievable for those willing to put in the work.

“You do need to work hard and show that you deserve to be at the table,” Sarah says. “But there’s so much support behind you to help you get there.”

No Two Days the Same

As Head of Audit, Sarah’s role is anything but predictable.

“A typical day is completely varied,” she explains. “One moment I’m deep in technical audit work, the next I’m working with my team, answering questions, solving problems, supporting them with their development.”

Alongside leading her team, Sarah is also heavily involved in client relationships, business development, and strategic decision-making. It’s a fast-paced, people-focused role that reflects the dynamic nature of the firm itself.

“It really does change from one minute to the next,” she says. “That’s what keeps it interesting.”

A Culture Built on Collaboration

One of the defining features of life at mgr is its collaborative culture.

“It’s very hard for anyone to work in isolation here,” Sarah explains. “We’re constantly talking, sharing ideas, supporting each other.”

From graduates through to senior leadership, communication is open and accessible. Junior team members are encouraged to ask questions, while senior leaders remain approachable and involved.

“We care about each other, we care about our clients, and we care about delivering great work,” she says. “That team spirit runs through everything we do.”

Support That Goes Beyond Work

While ambition and performance are important, so too is recognising that people have lives beyond the office.

For Sarah, that support has been a key reason for staying with the firm throughout her career.

“I’m a mum of two, and like anyone, I’ve had different life stages and responsibilities,” she says. “The firm has always supported that.”

That support isn’t just theoretical, it’s embedded in how teams operate day to day. Flexibility, understanding, and trust are actively encouraged, even at the most senior levels.

“You can have a full life and still achieve your career goals,” Sarah adds. “That’s really important.”

Meaningful Work, Real Impact

The variety of clients and industries adds another dimension to the experience.

From well-known retail and e-commerce brands to emerging sectors like renewable energy, the work is both diverse and impactful.

“We work with some really interesting businesses,” Sarah says. “It’s exciting to be part of industries that are evolving and growing.”

For early-career professionals, this means exposure to real, meaningful work from the outset, helping to build both confidence and capability.

Opportunities Without Borders

As part of the wider ETL Global group, the opportunities extend far beyond the UK.

“There’s a real sense of collaboration internationally,” Sarah explains. “You’re working with talented people across different countries, sharing ideas and best practice.”

Whether it’s attending conferences, collaborating on global projects, or simply building connections, the international dimension adds a valuable layer to career development.

More Than Just Work

Of course, it’s not all about deadlines and deliverables.

“We work hard, but we have fun whilst we’re doing it,” Sarah says.

From summer parties to team socials, there’s a genuine sense of enjoyment across the firm. It’s a place where people build not just careers, but relationships.

Thinking About Your Next Step?

For anyone considering a career with mgr or within the wider ETL group, Sarah’s advice is simple:

“What are you waiting for? Just go for it.”

With opportunities to gain qualifications, develop transferable skills, and progress in a supportive environment, it’s a place where careers can truly take shape.

And as Sarah’s journey shows, it might just be somewhere you’ll want to stay.
